Province 1 govt in crisis following UML split

New govt before Dashain festival: Oppn

KATHMANDU: With the split of the CPN-UML, the provincial government of Province 1 led by UML has been in crisis.

Province 1 government led by Chief Minister Sherdhan Rai had prorogued the session of the Province Assembly after UML was certain to split.

Opposition parties have been accusing Chief Minister Rai of ending the session overnight fearing that a no confidence motion would be tabled in the parliament.

Chief whip of main opposition Nepali Congress in Province 1 Kedar Karki has alleged that the government prorogued the session overnight to cling on to power even for few days so as to cover up cases of corruption.

Leader Karki said the government led by Rai will not last for a long time asserting that a new government will be formed by the opposition alliance before the Dashain festival.

However, Chief whip of UML Parliamentary Party of Province 1 Buddhi Kumar Rajbhandari expressed confidence that the government will not change immediately as predicted by Karki.

Rajbhandari said so arguing that the five provincial lawmakers close to Madhav Kumar Nepal are not immediately joining the newly formed CPN United (Socialist)

But, in case the five lawmakers lent support to the CPN United Socialist, the Rai-led government would fall into crisis, said Rajbhandari.

There is an alliance among the NC, United Socialist, CPN (Maoist Center) and Janata Samajwadi Party against the CPN-UML in Province 1.

The UML has 52 lawmakers, NC 21, Maoist Center 15, Janata Samajwadi Party 3, Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Federal Democratic Party has one each in Province 1.

The United Socialist has been claiming that a total of 15 lawmakers are in its support.
