US announces plan for sharing 55 million vaccine doses globally

Nepal named as one of 18 countries getting share from 16 million doses

KATHMANDU: The United States has announced the distribution of the remaining 55 million of total 80 million doses to the world.

US President Joe Biden announced the additional doses more than two weeks after its plan for the first 25 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

According to reports, out of the 55 million doses, 16 million will be given to Asia under the Covax facility.

Nepal has been named as one of the 18 countries getting a share from the 16 million doses, according to a statement by the White House.

Nepal, along with India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Maldives, Bhutan, Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Papua New Guinea, Taiwan, Cambodia, and the Pacific Islands will be getting 16 million doses.

The exact allocation for Nepal has not been spelt out yet.

According to the statement, about 41 million will be shared through COVAX.

Likewise, about 14 million will be shared for Latin America and the Caribbean countries, including Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Guatemala, El Salvador, Uruguay, Haiti, Honduras, and other Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries, Dominican Republic, Panama, and Costa Rica.

Likewise, 10 million will be given to Africa to be shared with countries that will be selected in coordination with the African Union.

Similarly, 14 million will be shared with countries such as Colombia, Haiti, Argentina, other CARICOM countries, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Panama, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Philippines, Pakistan, Indonesia, Vietnam, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, Jordan, Cabo Verde, Yemen, Iraq, Oman, Tunisia, West Bank and Gaza, Kosovo, Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, and Bosnia.
