PM Deuba acted against law by inaugurating TV channels backed with foreign investment: UML Spokesperson Gyawali

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Spokesperson Pradip Gyawali has said Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba acted against the law by inaugurating television channels ‘Astha Nepal’ and ‘Patanjali Nepal’ that were being operated on foreign investments.

Spokesperson Gyawali also questioned Prime Minister Deuba what was the reason for inaugurating those television channels which are prohibited by the law of Nepal.

Speaking at a program organized by Press Chautari Nepal in Kathmandu on Sunday, he said that Nepal has banned foreign investment in the media and clarified that these things are not welcome.

Prime Minister Deuba inaugurated two television channels named ‘Astha Nepal’ and ‘Patanjali Nepal’ in Kathmandu on Friday. Spokesperson Gyawali claimed that the two channels inaugurated by Prime Minister Deuba were not legal. He also said that the channels were operating in a divergent manner, not in line with the national interest.

Foreign investment in media has been completely banned, especially in the media sector, from television to various other media. We don’t understand in what way the Prime Minister inaugurated those TV channels?”
