CIAA can no longer carry out sting operations: SC

400 cases to be dismissed

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) today ruled that the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) will no longer be allowed to conduct sting operations.

The SC issued the order in a writ petition filed by advocate Bishnu Prasad Ghimire seeking dismissal of the sting operation.

A five-judge constitutional bench, including Chief Justice (CJ) Cholendra Shamsher Rana, gave the order today, according to Supreme Court Information Officer Devendra Dhakal.

With this decision, as many as 400 cases filed by the CIAA on the basis of sting operation alone will be dismissed.

However, the full text of the decision has not been publicized yet.

The CIAA had been conducting sting operations based on the anti-corruption body’s regulations.
