Ruling CPN-UML on brink of split as intra-party feud hits new high

KATHMANDU: The ruling CPN-UML is on the verge of split after the intra-party dispute has taken a new height.

According to a UML source, the Nepal-Khanal faction is making preparations to register a new party after party Chairman initiated actions against the disgruntled faction saying that the latter was engaged in carrying out activities against the party interest.

Both the factions are engaged in blame games.  The Nepal-Khanal faction has been demanding that the party should be run in line with the party statue while the establishment has been accusing the disgruntled faction of forming parallel committees against the party interest and statute.

Sending letters to 32 UML lawmakers (27 federal and five provincial) including senior leader Madhav Nepal on Tuesday, the establishment demanded clarifications.

According to a UML source, the Nepal-Khanal faction has started doing homework to register a new party after Chairman KP Sharma Oli initiated actions against it.

Senior leader and former Prime Minister Nepal has consulted with his copper-bottomed leaders on the election symbol and the registration of the new party, the sourced claimed.

“The process of registration of a new party has started after party Chairman Oli initiated actions against UML leaders one after the other. We will form a new party and take part in the next elections,” said a UML source.

Even if the new party is registered, it would not unify with the CPN (Maoist Center) but can form an alliance with it in the upcoming elections, according to sources.
