‘Opposition must play responsible role in running Parliament’

KATHMANDU: The government has urged the opposition to play a responsible role in running the federal parliament. Stating that important bills have been stalled in the parliament for a long time, the opposition has been urged to find a solution through talks and dialogue.

Speaking to reporters after Monday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Gyanendra Bahadur Karki said that important bills brought by the previous government itself were being blocked by the same party that was leading the government.

Finance Minister Janardan Sharma said that he was continuing talks and dialogue with the opposition by creating a cordial atmosphere. He clarified that the government has a policy of maintaining national unity by holding talks and dialogue with the opposition through an all-party meeting. He clarified that the government has not stopped any of the plans put forward by the previous government, adding that the budget has been reduced by only three percent with the aim of increasing revenue.

Minister of State for Health and Population Umesh Shrestha said that 4.4 million vaccines against COVID-19 had arrived in Nepal lately and shared the plan of the government to vaccinate the persons above 18 years of age in the commercial sector within the next 10 days.

Chief Whip of the main opposition party CPN (UML) Bishal Bhattarai clarified that the parliament was blocked in protest against the working style of the speaker rather than the agenda presented in the parliament. He complained that the government had forcibly passed the budget without any discussion with the opposition.
