Five arrested for trading ancient statute of Lord Buddha in Bardiya



KATHMANDU: Police have arrested five people on charge of trading an ancient Buddha statue in Bardiya Thursday.

Police also seized an archeologically significant statue of Lord Buddha statue from them.

Police had raided Bijay Guest House in Gulariya Municipality of Bardiya on the basis of a tip-off that some people were selling precious metal statue of Lord Buddha for 10 millions rupees.

The arrested have been identified as Nirajan Upreti, 40, of Gulariya Municipality-7, Ujwal Rokay, 34, of Madhuban Municipality-1, Amrit Rai, 34, of ward 9, Ishwar Prasad Upadhyay, 32, of Thakur Baba Municipality-9 and Maga Bahadur Nepali, 29, of Jajarkot Barekot Municipality-2.

According to SP Ishwor Karki, the statue of Buddha was found during a search of room number 328 of Bijay Guest House.
