EC reluctant to register Nepal’s UML and Thakur’s JSP

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has shown reluctance to register the new parties with the names CPN-UML (Samajbadi) and Janata Samajbadi Party (Democratic).

The EC said that the new party CPN-UML (Samajbadi) registered by Madhav Kumar Nepal with the EC should not include “UML” in its name.

Likewise, the EC has also said that the party led by Mahanta Thakur cannot use the “Janata Samajbadi Party” (JSP) in his new party.

The EC has informed both the parties that it is not possible to register a new party by adding the names of “UML” and “JSP”

The election body is preparing to send a written letter to both the factions giving verbal information that the name of the new party cannot be registered with the names that are similar to the other party.

Madhav Nepal and Mahanta Thakur had on Wednesday applied with the EC for registering “CPN-UML Samajwadi” and “JSP Democratic” parties respectively.

However, the EC had shown reluctance to register the parties.

Meanwhile, the Mahanta faction has said that they were carrying out their homework to come up with a new name following the request of the Election Commission.
