Police nabs landlord in Babarmahal for caste-based discrimination

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu police has nabbed a landlord of Pradhan caste of Babarmahal Kathmandu for refusing to lend rooms after knowing the caste of the would-be tenant.

According to SP Ramesh Basnet, the police nabbed the landlord on allegation of promoting caste discrimination.

The landlord had first agreed to rent the flat to Rupa Sunar, 24, of Tanahun; however, after knowing her caste she had later sent the message that the house was occupied and she could not rent it any more.

Sunar, who felt humiliated in front of her friends, had posted a video describing the bitter experience that evening.

She had filed a case against the landlord, on Thursday, claiming the landlord had discriminated and humiliated her on the basis of her caste.

Sunar, who lives in a rented room with her mother in Kathmanu, runs a program on Image Television.

“First the landlord agreed to let us rooms on rent. She even said we could live as family members; however, when it came to caste and I told that I am a daughter of Kami, she went hesitant and sent the notice later that she could not let us the rooms,” Sunar said.

The police has registered a complaint against the housewife under Section 4, Sub-section 3 of the Caste Discrimination and Untouchability Case.

There is a legal provision of imprisonment for three months to three years and a fine of fifty thousand to two hundred thousand rupees if found guilty in such cases.
