All-party meeting ends appealing UML to allow parliament to function

Agenda of MCC inconclusive

KATHMANDU: An all-party meeting called to discuss clearing CPN-UML’s obstruction in parliament and moving forward the United States grant project Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC) has concluded Sunday.

According to government Spokesperson Minister of Communication and Information Technology Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, political parties urged the UML to come to dialogue and end the obstruction at people-elected parliament.

“The all-party meeting concluded that the voice of the people was being suppressed due to the UML’s obstruction in the parliament. The role of the opposition is important to keep parliamentary democracy alive, but that does not mean not allowing the parliament to function,” Minister Karki said.

Political parties also expressed their views on MCC and agreed to reach a conclusion following further discussion on the agenda.

Nepal Workers and Peasants Party leader Prem Suwal, who was present in the meeting, said the Rastiya Janamorcha and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), meanwhile, opposed another agenda of the meet — the passage of MCC agreement — when Minister Karki put forth the matter.

Similarly, CPN-Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha were in favor of moving forward MCC only after an amendment to the agreement. Similarly, CPN-Unified Socialist Party General Secretary Beduram Bhusal also seconded the proposal to amend the agreement before its passage.

On the other hand, Janata Samajbadi Party Federal Council Chairman Dr. Baburam Bhattarai favored MCC’s passage while another Chairman Upendra Yadav kept to himself and did not present his view on the matter.
