We promulgated the Constitution despite threats and intimidation: UML leader Nemwang

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML leader Subash Chandra Nemwang has categorically said that the Constitution, which was brought through extensive discussion, will not be changed at any cost.

“Let me reveal to you today that we decided not to change the name and flag of the country despite pressure coming from some quarters to change Nepal’s name and flag,” Nemwang told a program organized by the party on the occasion of Constitution Day, Sunday.

Stating that the then Constituent Assembly (CA) drafted the Constitution after extensive discussion, Nemwang, who was the Chairman of the then CA said, “This is a multi-national country, but a unified country of diversity.”

He also sniffed sarcasm over some parties for not observing the Constitution Day despite being in the government under the same constitutional provision.

Nemwang further said that he and other party leaders were under immense pressure from various quarters to draft the Constitution as per their desire.

“We even received threats, we were even intimidated,” Nemwang said adding that the CA drafted the Constitution notwithstanding all obstructions. He, however, did not elaborate.

CPN-UML leader Nemwang also ridiculed the government for recommending the names of those who played a major role to split the party and fought against the KP Sharma Oli government to receive medals from the President on the occasion of Constitution Day.

“Some leaders and advocates, who filed lawsuits against UML government have received medals,” he ridiculed.
