KATHMANDU: A cabinet meeting is taking place at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar today.

The meeting called this morning will dwell on the prevention and control of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a minister.

“The cabinet will be focused on the prevention and control of the coronavirus pandemic,” said the minister.

A COVID-19 Crisis Management Center (CCMC) held on Saturday had recommended closing schools and run classes online until May 14 in view of the increasing cases of COVID-19. The cabinet meeting will discuss this issue.

People have been watching cautiously on what decision the cabinet will take at a time when the pressures have been mounting on the government to immediately take preventive measures to curb the COVID-19.

It is learned that the new health protocol is likely to be issued by the meeting.

Chief District Officers of the Kathmandu Valley in a meeting of District COVID-19 Crisis Management Center (DCMC) on Sunday suggested that the schools should be closed at least for two weeks to control increasing cases of COVID-19.

On the other hand, school operators have been saying that the schools should be continued by adopting health safety measures.

As many as 435 persons have been infected with COVID-19 in the Kathmandu Valley in the last 24 hours.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, there have been 326 cases in Kathmandu, 64 in Lalitpur, and 45 in Bhaktapur in the past 24  hours.

The meeting is also expected to dwell on the demands of Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP). JSP has been demanding the release of Resham Chaudhary, withdrawal of cases filed against its cadres during the Madhesh movement and amendment to the Constitution.
