KATHMANDU: Photojournalist and mountaineer Poornima Shrestha of Arughat, Gorkha, will begin a challenging task of conquering Mount Annapurna I, one of 14 mountains above 8,000 meters in the world, on Saturday.

Shrestha has reached Pokhara Friday, where she was felicitated by the Gandaki Province government. The province government extended support of Rs 800,000 to her expedition. Gandaki Chief Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung has wished success to Shrestha.

She will reach Annapurna Rural Municipality in Myagdi on Saturday. Annapurna Rural Municipality is also supporting Shrestha’s ascent bid with Rs 500,000.

Shrestha will be accompanied by a 17-member team of Seven Summit Treks and Expedition in the climb.

Shrestha will be the first Nepali female to reach the top of Annapurna I (8,091-m) if her ascent bid is successful.

Annapurna I is considered one of the toughest ascents as it poses extreme weather conditions and risks to mountaineers all over the world.

Gandaki Province is home to three peaks that are over 8,000 meters. They are Annapurna, Manaslu and Ama Dablam.

Shrestha successfully climbed Mount Everest, Mount Manaslu, and Mount Ama Dablam before this.
