595 inmates being released on occasion of Democracy Day



KATHMANDU: A total of 595 inmates are being released on Friday on the occasion of Democracy Day.

The government decided to commute the remaining sentences of 580 prisoners and grant amnesty to 15 others.

The cabinet meeting held on Tuesday decided to commute the remaining sentences of 179 prisoners as per the provisions of the Criminal Code 2017 and the remaining 401 prisoners as per the Criminal Code, which came into force on August 17, 2018.

Corruption, rape, tampering with government documents, organized crime, arson with intent to kill people, crimes against the state, war crimes, subversive crimes or weapons-related crimes, and crimes related to human trafficking are not allowed for pardon.

Similarly, sexual exploitation or violence against women, sexual exploitation or violence against children, genocide, cruel, inhuman or degrading crimes against humanity, brutal or inhumane killings, hostage-taking and kidnapping, drug trafficking, fraudulent foreign employment, customs evasion and imports.

There is a legal provision of non-pardon and non-pardon for crimes related to espionage, protected wildlife and archeological objects.

Besides these, there is a provision to waive the imprisonment on the recommendation of the government if 50 percent of the imprisonment has already been paid.
