President Bhandari grants amnesty to 523 inmates on Constitution Day

KATHMANDU: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has set a total of 523 inmates free on the occasion of Constitution Day.

According to the Office of the President, Shital Niwas, of the total, President Bhandari gave amnesty to eight people, including Kishor Bhandari aka Purna Bahadur who were convicted by various courts of the country.

The amnesty was granted upon the recommendation of the cabinet’s meeting on September 14 and in line with the Criminal Procedure Code, 2017.

Similarly, the Head of the State pardoned other remaining jailbirds, waiving the remaining jail terms in line with Article 276 of the Constitution of Nepal, said Shital Niwas.

The decisions to condone the prisoners also aligned with the Criminal Offence (Determination and Implementation of Punishment) Act-2017, Senior Citizen Act-2007 and as per the verdict of the Supreme Court on August 3, 2020.
