Senior leader Nepal cannot remain in party if he voted for PM Deuba: UML

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML has said that senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal cannot remain in the party if cast his vote of confidence in favor of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.

Party spokesperson Pradeep Gyawali said they discussed the issue of Prime Minister Deuba taking a vote of confidence on Sunday, which he said they came to know only today morning.

“The issue of taking a vote of confidence in the first sitting of the House has raised various questions,” Gyawali said adding, “Since UML is in the opposition, we cannot support the government.”

He added that since the UML has already decided to vote against PM Deuba in today’s voting in the House of Representatives, UML is also discussing the issue with other party leaders.

According to him, Gyawali and others had held a meeting with senior leader Nepal, who reiterated his stance of voting in favor of PM Deuba.

Gyawali added that senior leader Nepal’s gesture showed that he is not in favor of party unity.

The faction led by Madhav Kumar Nepal however remained absent in today’s meeting held in Lalitpur.

Leaders close to Chairman Oli, including Bishnu Poudel, Subash Nemwang and Shanker Pokhrel, also the members of the task force, had earlier reached Koteswor to meet leader Nepal this morning.

The party is currently on the verge of a split as the party’s senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal faction has been adamant about its stance of giving a vote of confidence to Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.

However, efforts have been made to make the party unity intact.

The UML had held its SC meeting and parliamentary party (PP) meeting Friday.

Leaders close to senior leader Nepal had abstained from both the meetings on Friday.

The unilateral SC meeting endorsed the 10-point resolution prepared by the dispute resolution task force.
