‘Some elements using MCC as weapon in bid to dismantle ruling coalition’

KATHMANDU: CPN-Unified Socialist Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal has said the United States-backed Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact was being used as a weapon by some elements in efforts to dismantle the alliance of the ruling parties.

Stating that the MCC had answered the questions raised by the government, Chair Nepal said, “The heads of the previously formed task force were working to make the project a controversial issue by raising various questions time and again. We are also taking into account the mentality of the people.”

“Much misleading information and negative propaganda related to MCC have been floated. I urge you to move forward without being misled by false information,” leader Nepal said.

When asked who was trying to break the alliance, he said, “There are many elements, it is up to journalists to figure it out.”

Talking to the media after the inauguration of the new party’s office in Minbhawan Friday, Chairman Nepal said while he was in the CPN-UML, the then Prime Minister KP Oli had shown urgency to pass the MCC Compact and made the then Foreign Affairs and Finance Ministers to sign memorandums beyond their jurisdiction. He added that he had criticized the work done by the Oli-led government.

He went on to say that following the formation of this incumbent government, ruling party leaders asked several questions to the MCC, which had been answered by the MCC headquarters.
