Speaker should not hold MCC hostage: NC leader Poudel



KATHMANDU:  The all-party meeting held in Baluwatar on Saturday focused on mainly three issues – the prevention and control of coronavirus, holding by-elections in the vacant constituencies and Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC)-, said CPN-UML leader and  Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Gyawali.

Speaking at the meeting Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli vented ire on Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota for not playing a constructive role in endorsing the MCC.

Similarly, senior Nepali Congress leader Ram Chandra Paudel said the MCC should be held hostage by the Speaker but tabled in the parliament for voting without further delay.

NC leaders urged the government to immediately take effective measures to curb the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, vowing the party’s full support and cooperation to the government.

The leaders in the meeting also agreed to hold by-elections in the vacant posts of people’s representatives in the constituencies across the country, said Minister Gyawali.

Similarly, the leaders present in the meeting also suggested the government to take an effective role in curbing the coronavirus pandemic, call the National Assembly meeting, initiate the process of electing the deputy speaker of the House of Representatives without further delay.

Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel, Vice President Bimalendra Nidhi, General Secretary Purna Bahadur Khadka, Parliamentary Party Chief Whip Bal Krishna Khand were present in the meeting.

Also present in the meeting included Janata Samajwadi Party Central Council Chairman Mahantha Thakur, leader Laxman Lal Karna, Neal Workers and Peasant Party (NWPP) lawmaker Prem Suwal aside from RPP leader Lohani .

However, JSP Federal Council Chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai, Chairman Upendra Yadav, CPN-UML’s senior leader Madhav Nepal, Jhala Nath Khanal and CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda did not turn up the meeting.

Similarly, along with Oli, participating in the meeting from the ruling UML were Ishwar Pokharel, Bishnu Poudel and Subas Nembang.
