UML holding Standing Committee meeting today

Nepal-Khanal faction unlikely to attend meeting

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has called a meeting of the Standing Committee on Friday.

The SC meeting will be held at 11 am at the Office of the Tulsi Lal Memorial Academy.

UML General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel has called the SC meeting of the UML at the direction of party chair Oli for the first time after leaving the government.

Senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal Group has also been invited to the meeting.

The meeting convened on July 12 to approve the 10-point agreement had been postponed. A Parliament Party (PP) meeting has been convened at Lotse Hall in New Baneshwor at 3 pm after the SC meeting.

After the reinstatement of the House of Representatives (HoR) and the appointment of Sher Bahadur Deuba as the Prime Minister, the relation between Chairman Oli and senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal has soured further.

The role played by senior leader Nepal in removing Prime Minister Oli and making Nepali Congress President Deuba the Prime Minister has been counterproductive.

He left Baluwatar and reached his residence in Balkot and expressed his discontentment with Nepal. Meanwhile, the Nepal-Khanal faction has been active in the alliance with the Nepali Congress.

Even though he did not attend the meeting of the ruling coalition on Thursday, Nepal  sent Vijay Poudel to participate. On Wednesday alone, Prime Minister Deuba had a discussion at his residence in Nepal on issues including the ruling coalition.

Despite the 10-point agreement, the second tier leaders have become active again to stop the division as the bitterness between Oli and Nepal continues to grow. They had an informal meeting on Thursday in which they agreed to call another SC meeting on Friday to maintain party unity.

Though an SC was convened at the request of both the parties in the task-force, Madhav has not formally informed whether he will attend the meeting or not.

Leaders of both the parties, Ram Bahadur Thapa, Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Lekhraj Bhatt, Mani Thapa, Raghubir Mahaseth, Bishnu Rimal, Beduram Bhusal and Raghuji Pant have also been invited to the meeting.
