Deuba to take vote of confidence only after being assured of majority

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has decided to set a date for a vote of confidence only after his government is ensured of getting majority in the parliament.

According to NC sources, PM Deuba has intensified the talk with CPN-UML’s Khanal-Nepal faction and Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal to be ensured that he could garner enough support for the vote of confidence.

He has to obtain vote of confidence within 28 days from today. He has the constitutional obligation to take vote of confidence by  August 12.

Leaders of the ruling NC have claimed that Deuba will get a vote of confidence. However, after UML senior leader Nepal said he would no more continue supporting through opposition formerly formed to oust then Prime Minister KP Oli, there are enough places to be skeptic about the chances of getting UML support.

“We want to ensure an atmosphere conducive to a vote of confidence,” said NC lawmaker Min Bahadur Bishwakarma, adding, “We are assured of getting support.”

In the meantime, UML lawmakers who had been signatories in the writ petition demanding that NC Deuba should be made the Prime Minister assure that their faction would do everything required to ensure the parliament works for its full term.

PM Deuba met UML senior leader Nepal on Wednesday and requested the latter to support him.

According to sources, Nepal replied that his party would not join the government but wished Deuba could get majority.

“We fielded the writ petition saying the parliament should function its full term; hence we’ll do everything possible to make the parliament works till the end,” Birodh Khatiwada, a lawmaker close to Khanal-Nepal faction of UML said.

Sources claim that Khanal-Nepal faction is divided over the faction’s official line to support PM Deuba.
