NC warns government not to revive formerly rejected Social Network Management Guidelines

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) has alerted the youths in the country that the government is trying to stifle freedom of expression in the name of ‘social network management’.

Issuing a press release on Monday, NC Spokesperson Bishwo Prakash Sharma has objected to the government attempt to introduce the controversial ‘Social Network Management Guidelines’, a bill still under consideration in the parliament through an ordinance.

Stating that no one objects to the remarks that social media has to be regulated and made more dignified and healthy, NC Spokesperson Sharma has made it clear that the prevalent provisions in the existing laws have to be considered first.

He added that the government’s attempt to issue the directives after the dissolution of the parliament and without further consultation raise questions about the intention of the government.

Spokesperson Sharma asserted that the caretaker government should not issue directives affecting civil rights.

He has also warned the government not to proceed with the proposed directives.

“Government impetus to take action on social media is another step towards authoritarianism,” NC’s press release concludes appealing to all youths to be aware and alert against the crooked motifs of the government.
