KATHMANDU: The main opposition in Gandaki Province — the CPN-UML — has formed a shadow government.

A meeting of the UML parliamentary party Friday formed a shadow government in the province.

There are 11 Ministries in Gandaki and the shadow government is formed to monitor the activities of the government, said provincial lawmaker Rajiv Pahari, who holds the portfolio of Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Health and Population in the shadow government. Juna Devi Nepali and Sabitra Ranamagar are members in Pahari’s team.

Mohan Prasad Regmi leads a team comprising Mayanath Adhikari and Meena Gurung as members to oversee the affairs of the Chief Minister and the Council of Ministers, said Pahari.

Ex-minister Ram Sharan Basnet along with Roshan Gaha Magar and Prabha Koirala have been tasked too watch over the portfolios of physical infrastructure, development and transport.

Likewise, former Minister Bikas Lamsal, Ram Bahadur Gurung and Laxmi Sunar will serve as shadows to ministries of Industry, Tourism, Forest and Environment.

Similarly, former Minister Nara Devi Punmagar is to take charge of social development portfolio with the help of lawmakers Janak Lal Shrestha and Indra Dhara Bista. Pushpa KC Bhandari will assist Chandra Mohan Gauchan to oversee the fronts of law, information, communication, and provincial affairs.

Indralal Sapkota will lead the finance portfolio with help from Krishna Bahadur Thapa.

In a similar manner, Mitra Kumari Gurung is the coordinator of the land, management and agriculture portfolios. Lawmakers Man Bahadur Gurung and Mahendra Thakali are members in this group.

The portfolios of energy and drinking water will be looked after by Min Prasad Gurung and Dhananjay Dawadi.

Pahari said that a shadow government had to be formed as the new government could not function effectively for a long time.
