Maharashtra goes into lockdown as COVID-19 cases spike

NEW DELHI: Indian State of Maharashtra is imposing lockdown from today with the spike in coronavirus cases, of late.

The lockdown will begin from 8 pm to curb the surging coronavirus cases, said Chief Minister of Maharashtra State Uddhav Thackeray.

Essential train and bus services, however, will remain operational, according to Minister Thackeray.

Similarly, petrol pumps, financial institutions associated with Indian Stock Exchange Board and construction activities will not be closed.

Hotels, restaurants, movie halls, public places and religious sites will remain shut.

India has recorded over 185,000 COVID-19 infection cases in the last 24 hours. With 1,026 deaths in a single day, the death toll from the coronavirus has reached 172,115 so far.
