NC leader Koirala against special general convention and CWC’s term extension



KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr Shekhar Koirala has said holding a special general convention and the extension of the term of Central Working Committee (CWC) was unacceptable to him.

Speaking at a meeting of the party’s CWC Friday, Dr Koirala said the party should not go against the party’s statute and regulation. “There is no alternative to conducting the regular general convention as the time mandated by the party’s statute has already passed,” he said.

At the CWC meeting, he clarified that CWC members did not raise the issue of a special general convention by extending the tenure of current CWC though some responsible leaders in the party floated such a proposal.

“The dispute regarding distribution of active membership hindered the general convention and the convention cannot be held until the dispute is resolved. We have developed schedule of the convention several times already,” he said, adding, “We should resolve the issue at the earliest and hold the general convention within one to two months.”

He is of the view that those who missed the renewal of active membership should be allowed to take part in the 14th general convention if they furnish the card of the previous general convention .i.e. the 13th general convention. He advised to incorporate this provision in NC’s election guideline.

Expressing his belief that the 14th general convention could be held as scheduled in September, Dr Koirala said, “In places of dispute, we have to recognize the participation of 13th general convention representatives and hold the upcoming convention.”
