PM Oli says SC decision disturbed balance of powers, democracy in peril

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has raised questions about the Supreme Court (SC) decision, saying it upended the democracy and the parliamentary system, putting both in danger.

Addressing the nation before leaving Baluwatar on Tuesday, outgoing PM Oli said the Supreme Court’s decision has upset the balance of power between the three main organs of the state.

He said, “The balance between the three organs of the state, which are the pillars of democracy, has been severely affected by this decision. The court decision can make someone happy for a while. But, in the long run, it has put democracy and the parliamentary party system in crisis.”

He also said that he would accept the SC decision, but the provisions and language of the decision have worried those who believe in the democratic system.

He said that the most important provision was to elect the people’s representatives through periodic elections and to govern through the elected officials. He expressed concern that the misinterpretation of the law in the name of forming a government could lead the democratic system in the wrong direction.

Oli said that the democratic system can be effective only if all parties remain within their respective domain. He said the balance between the executive, the judiciary and the legislature had been severely disturbed by the court’s decision, adding that it carried no meaning in the future even if it momentarily benefits anyone.
