NHRC calls for impartial investigation into Motipur incident

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on the government to carry out an impartial investigation into the Rupandehi incident, to bring the culprits to book and to provide free medical treatment to those injured in the incident.

The constitutional body demanded a fair investigation into the incident that took place at Motipur of Rupandehi Sunday. Four demonstrators died and around 60 people including security persons, were injured in police firing in course of a clash ensued between the demonstrators and the security personnel as the latter tried to evict the people living in temporary sheds encroaching upon the land belonging to the proposed Motipur Industrial Zone in Rupandehi.

“An impartial investigation should be conducted into the incident which has claimed the life of the people and culprits should be brought to book. The families of those who died in the incident should be provided with compensation,” NHRC spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokharel said.

Dr Pokharel has also demanded that arrangements should be made for providing free treatment to the people injured in the incident and for settling the genuinely homeless and landless people in proper place. NHRC has urged all sides concerned to adopt patience and resolve the dispute through talks so as to prevent additional challenges regarding guaranteeing human rights and restoring law and order in the aftermath of the incident.

Dr Pokharel said the NHRC’s Lumbini Province Office Butwal has started monitoring the incident.
