Gurung likely to become CM of Gandaki Pradesh again

RJM provincial lawmaker denies signing

POKHARA: Chief Minister (CM) Prithvi Subba Gurung who resigned on May 9 is likely to become the Chief Minister of Gandaki Pradesh again.

Gurung had tendered his resignation one day before opposition lawmakers decided to loge a no confidence motion against him on May 10.

Following the resignation by Gurung, Province Chief Sita Paudel called for the formation of a coalition government from two or more than two parties within three days from the day the Chief Minister resigned from his post.

The opposition parties willing to form a coalition government have to submit signatures of a majority of lawmakers by 4 pm on Wednesday.

The opposition parties – Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Center), and Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) had collected signatures of 27 lawmakers against Gurung after Rastriya Janamorcha (RJM) pulled out of the government.

The majority, however, did not reach after RJM lawmaker Krishna Thapa denied signing the proposal of a new coalition government.

Hence, Gurung is likely to become the Chief Minister of Gandaki Pradesh if nothing miraculous happened in the opposition alliance.

RJM lawmaker Thapa denied signing the proposal against the party whip. RJM Chairman Chitra Bahadur KC has said the party would take action against Thapa for not complying with the party’s direction.

However, lawmaker Thapa has not reacted to it.

The no confidence motion led by Nepali Congress leader Krishna Chandra Nepali had been lodged after RJM pledged support for it.

The alliance led by Nepali is making preparations to submit signatures of 31 lawmakers to form a coalition government.

Nepali Congress has 15, CPN (Maoist Center 12, RJM three and JSP has two lawmakers in the Gangaki Pradesh.

If the RJM lawmakers denied signing the proposal, Gurung will become the Chief Minister again as the lawmaker of the largest party in the province.

Such a government has to take the vote of confidence within 30 days.
