Parties intensify meetings to form a new government

KATHMANDU: The last two days have been hectic for the political party leaders especially the Nepali Congress (NC), which has decided to take initiative to form a new government under its leadership.

The NC party has decided to put all-out efforts to form a new government as per Article 76 (2) of the Constitution after Prime Minister KP Oli lost the vote of trust in the House of Representatives on Monday.

On Tuesday, the party held a meeting of its office-bearers and former office-bearers at party President Sher Bahadur Deuba’s residence, Budhanilakantha.

The party is currently trying to woo leaders, particularly the faction led by Mahanta Thakur of the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP), to support NC to form a new government.

According to NC joint general-secretary Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, NC will still exert efforts for securing full support from JSP to form a new government.

“We will try to convince the JSP to support our party to form the government,” Dr Mahat said.

The CPN (Maoist Centre) has already lent its support to NC President Deuba for the same.

According to Dr. Mahat, the parties will intensify meetings and discussions to forge a consensus on Wednesday as well.

It should be noted that President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Monday had called on the parties to stake a claim for the Prime Minister from among the members of the HoR who can have the majority with the support from two or more political parties as per Article 76 (2) of the Constitution within 9.00 pm of May 12.

NC President Deuba, Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” and JSP chair Upendra Yadav had jointly urged President Bhandari to call for the formation of a majority government.

While the CPN-UML has 121 lawmakers in the HoR, the NC 63 (two suspended), CPN-Maoist Center (53, with four suspended), JSP 34 (two suspended), and the Rastriya Janamorcha, Nepal Workers and Peasants Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party have one each and one independent lawmaker.
