NC leader Shrestha vows support for Deuba after Sitaula

Poudel group struggling hard to finalize common candidate

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba is likely to turn the tables in his favor in the presidential race under the 14th General Convention after another presidential candidate Gopal Man Shrestha vowed support for him.

Leader Shrestha who had earlier shown interest in the presidential post has extended support for Deuba at a time when the Poudel faction is still struggling hard to forge consensus for a common candidate.

The NC faction led by Krishna Prasad Sitaula has already announced support for Deuba.

However, Vice President Bimalendra Nidhi from the establishment faction has not backed off from the presidential race. Nidhi said he is making preparations to register nomination for the post of president at 3 pm today.

Poudel who lost the election to Deuba in the 13th general convention is likely to back off from the presidential race if there is no consensus on a common candidate.

It has been a tough nut to crack for the Poudel faction after Prakash Man Sing, Shashanka Koirala and Shekhar Koirala have not budged an inch from their stances. The faction is still holding a meeting in a last resort effort to forge consensus.

The nomination registration of the NC general convention which kicked off from Friday is being held today for the new leadership.
The voting will take on Monday.
