KATHMANDU: The 12th national census is taking place from November 11-25.

Preparations for the census that occurs every 10 years have been over, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics.

The first phase of the census wherein household and family listing took place has been already completed.

Approximately 40,000 enumerators and 8,500 supervisors would be mobilized to collect details of persons who have been listed or those who missed out on the listing, within 15 days, said the Bureau Director-General Nebin Lal Shrestha.

To make the census successful, census coordination and felicitation committees have been formed at central to local levels, he said.

Census offices have been established in all 77 districts (all seven provinces) and local census offices at 349 local levels, he said.

There are 80 questionnaires in the census forms. A family will be granted an average of 20 minutes to fill out the forms.

In his reply to a query about the possibility of incorporation of Kalapani, Lipulek, and Limpiyadhura in the national census, he said diplomatic efforts were underway towards that end through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He talked about the possibility of the use of satellite technology to count the households in the above-mentioned areas and conduct the census on the same basis.

During the census, this time, a digitalized technology (CAPI) is to be used for the collection of statistics in six local levels in the Kathmandu district including the Kathmandu Metropolis.

Likewise, e-census is to be applied for the collection of statistics of Nepali staff in the Nepali diplomatic missions aboard and their family members.

As Director-General Shrestha said, is based on the household listing, it seems that Nepal’s population would not exceed 30 million during the 12th national census.

The preliminary report of the census is likely within the three months of the completion of the census and it will take two years to release the complete details.
