All-party meeting adopts resolve to save democracy, constitution

KATHMANDU: Political leaders have concluded that democracy and the constitution – facing serious crisis — should be saved.

After the all-party meeting convened by Speaker Agni Sapkota at Parliament Building in New Baneshwor Friday, former Prime Minister and JSP leader Dr. Baburam Bhattarai said the House of Representatives (HoR) was being dissolved time and again, and all the parties had agreed to work to save democracy as Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s decisions often trapped the HoR.

“Democracy is trapped now. Parliament has been dissolved twice. It is a common concern,” said Dr Bhattarai. “Coronavirus is surging and vaccines are far from being managed. We all share the same opinion on this issue as well.”

In the meeting, the leaders of the participating parties unanimously agreed that Chure exploitation was also a wrong decision of the government. Leader Bhattarai said the party leaders suggested to the speaker that the dissolution of the parliament was wrong. He expressed confidence that the Supreme Court would rule in their favor and, said repeatedly dissolving the parliament were acts of tyranny and arbitrariness.

“We have suggested to the speaker to restore democracy, preserve democracy,” Bhattarai said.

Speaker Sapkota discussed the political situation with political leaders after the second dissolution of the parliament by PM Oli. Earlier, he consulted legal experts as well.
