NC leader Thapa warns of street protest if govt exploits COVID restrictions for petty gains

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Gagan Thapa has warned that if the government tries to take advantage of restrictions imposed to curb and control the coronavirus pandemic, the people will be compelled to take to the streets for their rights.

Responding to the government’s aggressive behavior against civil society leaders protesting against the government, leader Thapa on Friday tweeted that people will come to the streets if the government abuses its power, tests the public’s patience, and does things arbitrarily.

After the arrest of 18  civil movement activists, including Narayan Wagle and Khagendra Sangraula from Baluwatar, he warned people will take countermeasures if the government tries to take advantage of the situation.

Civil society leaders protested against the government’s decision to give affiliation to a private medical college, disregarding the fact that the medical college did not meet the requirement for it.

“It is wrong to take to the streets in violation of the prohibitory order imposed to curb and control the pandemic; but when the government, for its own petty interests, tries to take advantage of the situation, ignoring the long-term impact on public health, conscious citizens have no choice but to take to the streets,” NC leader Thapa tweeted.
