Maoist Center Chair Prachanda and NC Prez Deuba holding talks at Budhanilkantha

To decide on new power-sharing

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN-Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ are holding talks in Budhanilkantha.

According to sources, the meeting between the two party heads is going on at NC President Deuba’s residence at Budhanilkantha since 12:05 pm.

After CPN-UML Chair and Prime Minister KP Oli secure the vote of confidence on Monday, the leaders are said to be busy working out for the formation of a new government.

PM Oli failed to get through the floor test after the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP), the PM had long been wooing for power sharing, refused to support him by giving him the vote of confidence.

JSP had been divided over whether to support PM Oli or join the opposition alliance and had finally decided not to a give vote of confidence to PM Oli.

When 15 JSP lawmakers voted against PM Oli, another 15 lawmakers of the Thakur-Mahato faction went neutral.

PM Oli’s vote of confidence could not win the favor of the disgruntled faction of his own party as well. As many as 28 lawmakers of the Nepal-Khanal faction of UML boycotted yesterday’s session of the parliament, letting the Oli-led government down.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari has called for the formation of a new government with a three-day deadline. The JSP’s Thakur-Mahato faction has said it will not side with the coalition government.

It is difficult to form a government as per Article 76 (2) of the constitution when a group of the JSP remains neutral.
