Trump impeachment: Democrats prepare to act over Capitol riot

WASHINGTON: The US House of Representatives could vote on an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump as early as Tuesday, a senior Democrat has said.

House Democrats are planning to introduce a charge of “incitement of insurrection” against Trump over his role in the violent storming of the Capitol, BBC reported.

House whip James Clyburn said action would be taken this week, according to CNN.

However, the party may not send any articles to the Senate for trial until after Joe Biden’s first 100 days in office, BBC has said.

This would allow President-elect Joe Biden to confirm his new cabinet and kick-start key policies including tackling coronavirus.

President Trump has not made any public statements since he was banned from social media platforms, including Twitter on Friday.
