NC’s Poudel faction fails to agree on a common presidential candidate



KATHMANDU: The non-establishment faction led by senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel of the Nepali Congress (NC) has failed to pick a consensus presidential candidate.

Leaders of non-establishment faction led by senior party leader Ram Chandra Poudel held discussions near the convention venue Friday evening to try to pick a common candidate among aspirants. However, the meeting concluded without any understanding.

Senior leader Poudel, General Secretary Shashank Koirala, former General Secretary Prakash Man Singh and central member Shekhar Koirala are aspirants fielding themselves for NC leadership in the party’s 14th general conventio that kicked off this afternoon.

After an understanding could not be reached, former General Secretary Singh exited the meeting venue earlier than other leaders. The meeting took palce in Anupam Food Land in Battisputali, Kathmandu.

While leaving the meeting venue, General Secretary Koirala said that despite the ongoing efforts, no agreement has been reached so far.

Incumbent NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Vice President Bimalendra Nidhi have fielded themselves as contenders for the presidency from the establishment group. However, there are four aspirants from the non-establishment faction.

The non-establishment led by senior leader Poudel could not reach and agreement despite continuous discussions and pressure to forward a common candidate from among them. Meanwhile, General Secretary Koirala was ready to withdraw his candidacy if senior leader Poudel was to become the consensus candidate.

Senior leader Poudel, leaders Singh and Koirala duo — all have announced their candidacies for NC presidency.
