MCC will be passed after reaching nat’l consensus, Maoist Center Chair Prachanda tells MCC Veep Sumar

KATHMANDU: CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda has said that the MCC agreement will be passed only after reaching a national consensus.

In a meeting with MCC Vice President Fatema Sumar at his residence in Khumaltar this morning, Prachanda said that the MCC will be passed only after striking a national consensus since it has become an issue of national debate in Nepal. He further said that there should be consensus within the ruling coalition as well.

MCC Vice President Sumar reached Khumaltar to hold a meeting with Maoist Center Chairman Prachanda at the latter’s residence in Khumaltar this morning.

Sumar, who arrived on a four-day visit to Nepal on Thursday, has already held meetings with the chairman of main opposition party CPN-UML KP Sharma Oli, CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal and Federal Council Chairman of Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Dr Baburam Bhattarai.

MCC Vice President Sumar is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba today.

MCC Vice President Sumar has arrived in Kathmandu to specifically affirm that the MCC grant program has no military component and that it will not impede on Nepal’s sovereignty.

She will also reiterate that Nepal’s Constitution will prevail over the agreement, according to a press statement released by the US Embassy here Thursday.

In her meeting with various government officials, and business and community leaders, she will discuss the required next steps to implement the 500 million USD MCC-Nepal infrastructure program and address the clarification questions provided by the Ministry of Finance while also hearing from the people of Nepal.

It may be noted that prior to negotiating and signing the compact in 2017, the Government of Nepal designed the five-year grant program to provide more reliable electricity and lower power and transportation costs for all Nepalis, adds the statement.
