UML task force likely to announce settlement of intra-party dispute today

Details of agreement to be made public after working out the language of unity agreement today

KATHMANDU: The two warring factions of the CPN-UML are likely to announce the ultimate agreement to end the long-running dispute in the party Saturday.

The task force formed to work out differences was able to clinch an agreement Friday evening and are giving the final touches to the unity deal Saturday. Task force member Pradip Gyawali had said they would make public details of the agreement on Saturday after reaching a conclusion on the language of the agreement.

The task force neared consensus following seven hours of continuous discussions regarding contentious issues on Friday. After the meeting ended late Friday evening, task force member Pradip Gyawali told the media that the issue of maintaining unity in the party had been resolved. “Friday’s meeting was very long and intensive. We agreed to strengthen the unity of the party,” said Gyawali. He had said they had reached a consensus on outstanding issues, including the future of leaders and cadres of the CPN-UML.

The rift in the party began as UML Chairman and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli dissolved the House of Representatives for the first time last year. The rift widened with Oli dissolving the parliament for the second time two months ago.

Meanwhile, the disgruntled faction led by senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal have signed a petition to make opposition leader Sher Bahadur Deuba the Prime Minister. As many as 23 lawmakers have signed the petition and they have refused to withdraw their signatures as demanded by Oli faction.

Amidst this, it is interesting to anticipate the agreement between the warring factions.
