KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba said the government disregarded the constitution and aggrandized itself above the law and constitution.

Speaking at a special session of the House of Representatives (HoR), Deuba, “The post of Deputy Speaker remained vacant for long. The government did nothing to place a Deputy Speaker knowing that Speaker and Deputy Speaker must to belong from different parties.”

The government did not provide for a Deputy Speaker in the parliament as per the spirit of the constitution, he added.

Moreover, “Prime Minister KP Oli also dissolved the HoR against the spirit of the constitution and it is clear after the Supreme Court reinstated the HoR.”

Deuba said that the Prime Minister could not blame others. “Who had stopped you from working? Being a PM, can you escape the PM’s responsibility by blaming others?”

He said the government carried out various activities that weakened constitutional bodies, worked against the constitution and against people’s aspirations.

He said the situation of peace and security in the country had declined after the incumbent government of PM KP Oli took charge. He supported his claim by mentioning various incidents of violence against women that shook the nation.

The government is also not able to receive the support of international organizations to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and has kept people in illusion, Deuba said.

He said the government has been a complete failure in many areas in its three years in power.
