Deuba to stake claim for new government if PM Oli fails floor test

KATHMANDU: CPN-Maoist Center and Nepali Congress (NC) leader are preparing to claim a majority government assuming that Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli would fail the floor test today.

According to sources, a meeting between Maoist Center and NC leaders held at the latter’s parliamentary party meeting in Singha Durbar agreed to make the main opposition NC claim for the majority government.

Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba had discussed the political aftermath when PM Oli fails to garner the required votes to prove his vote of confidence in the parliament.

One of the participants in the meeting, Maoist leader Barsha Man Pun said that the opposition party will claim for the majority government as per Article 76 (2) of the Constitution.

Article 76(2) has the provisions of the formation of the government consisting of two or more parties if a single party in the parliament does not have sufficient votes to claim a single-party government.
