Nepal-Khanal faction lawmakers’ en masse resignation likely to be postponed

PM Oli has deputed two leaders to talk to the faction to postpone mass resignation

KATHMANDU: Ruling CPN-UML’s disgruntled Nepal-Khanal faction is likely to postpone the en-masse resignation of its lawmakers for the time being.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has deupted two leaders namely Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel and deputy parliamentary party (PP) leader Subash Nembang to talk to the Nepal faction to postpone their mass resignation. The leaders of two rival factions have been holding a meeting at Singha Durbar.

Poudel and Nembang are trying to convince Nepal faction leaders to postpone their resignation. Nepal faction leaders are attending the meeting with their resignations.

According to Jiban Ram Shreshtha, a lawmaker belonging to Nepal-Khanal faction, the group has decided not to forward the en-masse resignation of its lawmakers for the time being as Prime Minister KP Oli is likely to fail the floor test scheduled for May 10. Also, PM Oli’s envoys are holding talks with the leaders of the disgruntled faction.

Earlier, the disgruntled Nepal-Khanal faction had made the plan to resign en-masse so that the party chairman and PM Oli would be deprived of their support.

However, after Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) leaders Mahantha Thakur and Rajendra Mahato changed their tone and have announced JSP would not give vote of confidence to PM Oli. This is likely to make PM Oli fail the floor test as UML does not have enough votes to prove its majority in the parliament. Thakur and Mahato formerly were seen inching closer to PM Oli,

Lawmaker Shrestha did not rule out the possibility of mass resignation on Monday.

“We will decide considering the political development by tomorrow,” he said.

More than 20 lawmakers are believed to have signed for the ‘mass resignation.’
