Opposition in Lumbini demand special session of PA

KATHMANDU: Opposition parties in Lumbini Province have demanded convening a special session of Province Assembly (PA).

As many as 40 lawmakers from the opposition Sunday wrote to Chief of Province Dharma Nath Yadav, asking him to call a special session of Lumbini PA to discuss a no-confidence motion filed against Chief Minister Shankar Pokharel for the second time this month.

The opposition filed a no-confidence motion against CM Pokharel earlier Sunday. They nominated Kul Prasad KC of the CPN Maoist Center as the Chief Minister with the support of the Nepali Congress (NC) and Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP).

Last month, opposition lawmakers had filed a no-confidence motion in the provincial Parliament Secretariat on April 19. However, that motion could not enter the voting stage after CM Pokharel resigned and got himself re-appointed claiming majority.

The opposition has been saying that the re-appointment of CM Pokharel is illegal and unconstitutional as Pokharel did not have a majority with him.

Lawmakers today registered a no-confidence motion citing the fact that the no-confidence motion registered on April 19 did not enter the House for discussion. They are of the view that now the PA’s special session needs to be convened to discuss the no-confidence motion filed today.
