PM Oli takes stock of poll preparations at EC (with video)

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Oli has taken stock of the polls preparations with the Election Commission (EC) officials at the Office of the EC Tuesday.

PM Oli had reached the EC to hold talks on the ongoing dispute of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) and the preparations of the upcoming elections.

“The discussion basically focused on elections rather than the ongoing dispute surrounding the authenticity of the NCP,” said Surya Thapa, Prime Minister’s Press Advisor.

Thapa added that PM Oli thanked the EC officials for expediting necessary preparations for the polls.

The government has, meanwhile, finalized the districts and provinces for holding elections in two phases on April 30 and May 10.

A cabinet meeting held on Monday has decided to hold elections in 40 districts of Pradesh 2, Gandaki, Lumbini and Karnali Pradesh on April 30.

Similarly, the elections will be held in 37 districts of Pradesh 1, Bagmati and Sudurpaschim on May 10, according to the decision.

Prime Minister Oli had announced to hold mid-term polls on April 30 and May 10 following the dissolution of the House of Representatives (HoR) on December 20.

However, the Supreme Court has not yet given its final verdict on the writ petitions filed against the dissolution of the HoR.

Earlier, the EC had summoned the top leaders of both the factions, but they had sent only their representatives to the EC.

A few days ago, Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda and Madhav Kumar Nepal of the disgruntled faction had gone to the EC to claim over the legitimacy of the party.

Prime Minister Oli has not gone to the Office of the EC since the dispute arose in the party.

Oli has been reiterating that the country should go for the elections.
