Trump’s Twitter account suspended permanently

WASHINGTON: Twitter has said US President Donald Trump’s account has been permanently suspended “due to the risk of further incitement of violence”.

The company said the decision to this effect was made “after close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account”.

The decision comes amid a Big Tech purge of the online platforms used by Trump and his supporters, BBC reported.

It may be noted that several of the celebrities and lawmakers have been calling for years on Twitter to ban Trump altogether.

Reacting to the ban, Trump 2020 campaign adviser Jason Miller tweeted: “Disgusting… if you don’t think they’re coming for you next, you’re wrong.”

Former First Lady Michelle Obama on Thursday tweeted that the Silicon Valley giants should stop enabling Trump’s “monstrous behavior” and permanently expel him, according to BBC.

Why was Trump banned?

Trump was locked out of his Twitter account for 12 hours earlier this week after he called the people who stormed the US Capitol “patriots”.

Several of Trump supporters entered the complex as the US Congress was trying to certify Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election.

The violence led to the deaths of four civilians and a police officer, according to BBC.

Twitter had then warned that it would ban Trump “permanently” if he breached the platform’s rules again.
