UN shows interest in Muslim community’s status in Nepal



KATHMANDU: The United Nations has shown interest about the status of the Muslim community in Nepal.

A UN delegation met the officials of the Muslim Commission at the Commission’s office on Tuesday and expressed concern over the economic and social condition of the Muslim community in Nepal. They also asked the Muslim community leaders about the problems the community is facing.

According to sources, the UN delegation led by Olivier De Schutter, coordinator of the UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights, inquired about the commission’s work, the socio-economic and educational status of Muslim community, and the geographical location of the commission.

During the meeting, the Chairman of the Commission Samim Miyan Ansari briefed about the work carried out by the Commission and the situation of the Muslim community.

Speaking about the meeting Ansari said that he informed the UN delegates about the efforts of the commission and the priorities especially providing education, inclusion and mainstreaming the Muslim community.

According to Ansari, the UN delegates had been to the Commission as they have to prepare a report about the status of the Muslims in a convention to be held in Geneva in 2022.
