Chief Justice’s resignation or removal will not ensure reform in judiciary: UML Chair Oli

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli has remarked that the resignation of Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana will not bring about reform in the judiciary.

In a discussion with officials of Nepal Bar Association at UML chair’s residence in Balkot Tuesday, he opined that judicial reform would not happen with the Chief Justice’s resignation or his impeachment.

“Many of your arguments are justifiable,” Chair Oli told Nepal Bar officials, adding, “the resignation of chief justice is not the beginning of judicial reform, it is rather the end. CJ’s resignation does not contribute to judicial reform but will put brakes on judicial reform.”

He was of the view that the judiciary at present was neither fair nor impartial. “You all have raised the issue of fairness,” Oli told Nepal Bar representatives, “However, I think you have missed out the issue of impartiality.” He wondered if lawyers were purposefully being selective about issues of judiciary.

Oli reiterated that the resignation of the Chief Justice or his removal would not start reform the judiciary.
