UML’s second-rung leaders hold talks to preserve party unity



KATHMANDU: Second rung leaders of the CPN-UML have intensified discussions for the past few days as a last-ditch effort to preserve party unity.

According to a source, the leaders of both UML factions are holding discussions to reach a consensus as at the direction of Prime Minister and party Chairman KP Sharma Oli.

Leaders close to Madhav Nepal faction Ghanshyam Bhusal, Gokarna Bista and Yogesh Bhattarai were in Baluwatar since Friday noon for talks. Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel, Deputy Leader of the Parliamentary Party Subash Nembang and other leaders are representing PM Oli faction in the talks.

Leaders of Nepal faction have emphasized on bringing the party back to the status quo of May 16, 2018, and then moving forward in a new way. A source said talks were on but nothing concrete has been finalized despite the ongoing unity efforts.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and UML General Secretary Ishwor Pokharel has reached Sheetal Niwas to meet the President. Pokharel went to Sheetal Niwas while the President is effortful to maintain party unity by trying to convince top party leaders.
