NC leader Singh disapproves govt bid to curb freedom of expression

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) Prakash Man Singh expressed his disapproval at the government’s attempt to curb freedom of expression.

Former General Secretary Singh drew the government attention towards criticisms against it among the public for trying to suppress fundamental rights of freedom of expression. Stating that NC is a party advocating freedom of expression and independence, he urged the government to be thoughtful while taking such steps.

Speaking at a program organized by Sindhupalchowk NC in Kathmandu Monday, Singh said the government should rectify its action, referring to the statement issued by the Home Ministry on Sunday regarding the burning the idol of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Home Ministry warned of action to those engaged in negative publicity of foreign government’s and representatives of foreign investment projects.

He remarked that it was objectionable for the Home Ministry to issue a statement barring citizens to express. He said that the government should support the people in their grief and should always take their side. “The Home Ministry should rectify its steps,” he added.

Stating that the NC always played an important role in times of national crisis, Singh said that the party should be strong and defend the country and democracy.

On a different note, he said no matter how well the party does, results won’t be achieved if the leadership is weak. He added there should be timely change in party leadership. He remarked that the democratic system in the country had also weakened along with party after the 13th General Convention.
