FNJ flays journalists’ arrest

KATHMANDU: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Kathmandu Chapter has condemned the police arrest of the Chapter secretary Mohan Prasad Panta and central council member Mandhoj Lama.

A team of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police had arrested them on Sunday.

The FNJ Kathmandu Chapter stated that Panta, who is also the program presenter in TV Today, and Lama, the editor of sanjalkhabar.com, were taken into control by the CIB team deceitfully and were kept at the CIB’s office at Maharajgunj for some hours, without valid reason.

An emergency meeting of the FNJ Kathmandu Chapter office-bearers and members presided over by the Chapter president Santaram Bidari has also flayed the arrest and demanded a factual investigation into the arrest of journalists.

It has called for taking action against the culprits. The meeting also decided to draw the attention of the government towards putting a stop on the infringement on press freedom and to create an environment conducive for independent journalism.
