Dr Govinda KC gets clean chit on contempt of court

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has given clean chit to Dr Govinda KC on contempt of court case, taking over his remarks made about the academic certificate of then Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli.

The full text of the verdict given on February 5, 2021 was released on Tuesday. A full bench of Justices Dipak Kumar Karki, Dr Ananda Mohan Bhattarai, Hari Krishna Karki, Mira Khadka, Prakash Man Singh Raut, Ishwar Khatiwada, and Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha made such verdict after hearing the case on contempt of court from the statement of Dr KC.

The SC stated that direct attack on court’s impartiality or spreading rumors among the public on judicial activities or any attempts carried out to defame the dignity of the judiciary is deemed a contempt of court.

According to the SC’s verdict, there was no basis that news carried out by Kantipur Daily equals contempt of court, and Prof Dr KC cannot be convicted on the charge through his press release and expressions were inept and claims for contempt of court were insufficient.
