SAFF Championship: Nepal beats Sri Lanka to top points table

KATHMANDU: Nepal has defeated Sri Lanka in a match underway in Male under the 13th edition of SAFF Championship.

Nepal thrashed Sri Lanka 3-2 in Male, the capital city of Maldives held on Monday night.

This is Nepal’s second straight win. Earlier, Nepal had defeated host Maldives 1-0 in the first match.

Suman Lama, Anjan Bista and Ayush Ghalan had scored a goal each for Nepal. Similarly, Marvin Hamilton and Dillon De Silva had scored one goal each for Sri Lanka.

Lama scored in the 33rd minute of the first half of the game, giving a lead to Nepal. Bista pulled up a goal in the 51st minute. Hamilton scored Sri Lanka’s first goal in the 57th minute of the game. Ghalan scored for Nepal in the 86th minute, taking the game to 3-1. D Silva scored another goal for Sri Lanka through penalty towards the fag end of the game. The score was 3-2 before the final whistle.

With this win, Nepal has climbed atop the points table with six points from two wins. Nepal will take on India on October 10.
